Biography - Henry Foxhall
Henry Foxhall started life in the quiet Devon town of Tavistock. After his parents left him in a room with a piano for 6 years, He rebelled and, age 10, picked up his first saxophone. Initially under the supervision of Leslie Mazur-Park, Henry moved on to lessons with local Trombone player Tony Evans, where his love of Jazz music and the Baritone sax started. Under the direction of Tony Evans, Henry won the woodwind section of the Ben Morland Young Musician of the Year competition. After a few years learning to improvise Henry moved slightly further afield, studying under Terry Sloggett (yes, really!) followed by renowned Devon sax player Martin Dale. During this time Henry was playing every week with the Tamar Valley Jazz Orchestra, where he was introduced to some of the great big band composers and arrangers
Henry went to university in Sheffield to study Materials Engineering, but kept his music passion alive as president of the Sheffield University Music Players Society, and director of music for the MPS Big Band. In 2002 he joined 7 piece Sheffield based funk band Nautilus, and started gigging throughout the city and local area, broadening his horizons into Jazz fusion at the same time. During the Nautilus years, Henry continued to take lessons (when student finances allowed) with local Jazzer Rob Skeet.
After a brief foray into the world of triathlon, Henry returned to music, playing tenor saxophone in the Colin Yates Big Band and Sizzlers Swing Orchestra, before joining Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods in the spring of 2010. He has since played at Gastonbury Festival, Derry Jazz Festival, Shambala, Rhythm Riot, and multiple Scandinavian vintage festivals
Henry currently has various projects on the go including tributes to Cannonball Adderley, Dave Weckl and Jimmy Giuffre. He also plays in the Ball Saxophone Quartet and Silver Spectrum Community Concert Band in Sheffield
